The Black Hole

By - Anaisha Goenka

A black hole is a place in space where gravity pulls so much that even light can not get out. The gravity is so strong because matter has been squeezed into a tiny space. This can happen when a star is dying …

Stellar black holes are made when the center of a very big star falls in upon itself, or collapses. When this happens, it causes a supernova. A supernova is an exploding star that blasts part of the star into space.

Based on this definition, what do you think a black hole might sound like? Spooky? Melodious? Cacophonous?

Take a few minutes to brainstorm ideas and write your response.

Next, listen to the “sonified” sounds of the Perseus black hole at the top of this lesson, that was recently released by NASA. Then, respond in writing or through discussion

To cap off the recent Black Hole week, in addition to the sonified sounds of the Perseus Black Hole, astronomers released the first direct images of “the gentle giant” Sagittarius A*, the black hole at the center of the Milky Way.
